I have just finished packing up three boxes of books that I will send to a shelter in Houston, TX, for those people affected by Katrina. My friend at work will help me to drive them to the post office this afternoon. Somehow, focusing on this problem helps me to remember how good my life is, in the wake of yesterday's problems at the office. (Same old story. I've already gathered from my family that they are bored by these problems because they are so predictable and repetitive, so I will not repeat them here.)

Last night I had my first nightmare about losing my pets to a disaster. I had the same dreams last year during hurricane season. I have no car. In my dream I was carrying them, one under each arm, over the Whitestone Bridge as I walked out of the city. I can imagine leaving all other possessions behind before I can imagine separating myself from these creatures with whom I share my life and home.
