And at the request of Elgan:

Gluehwein – for that German Christmas Market feeling:

INGREDIENTS:

In a saucepan, bring to a boil:
- 3/4 cup water
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 cinnamon stick

Reduce heat to simmer, add the following ingredients, and simmer for about 30 minutes:
- the juice of 2 small oranges (I use mandarins) or 1 large orange
- the juice of 1 lemon
- the orange peels (if organic!)
- 5-10 whole cloves

If oranges are organic, I push the cloves into the remaining orange peel for easy removal later. Lemon peel also works.

Pour in 1 bottle red wine and heat until steaming but not simmering. Remove the peels before serving.

Personal variations: Because I prefer it fruity and spicy rather than super sweet, I add more cinnamon and wine, less sugar, and garnish with orange wedges.

Nice variation if (a) you’ve handed off the car keys, (b) the streets are not icy, or (c) you are in the safe comfort of your own home: Add one shot of amaretto, brandy, or apple schnapps.
