...entry revisited...

I've now read five books, played 'tick tock i'm a little cuckoo clock' and 'duke of york' a couple times, hung out on the floor, banged a spoon against a metal bowl, and helped a feline escape Susi's enthusiastic young death grip (administered while repeating 'tee tee! tee tee!' (her word for kitty)). And a few other things. Oh yes, we also nursed, and discussed the snow outside the front window (GEEZ MOM DO YOU REALIZE HOW COOL THIS IS????? in essence, that's what she said in Susi language. I think.)

Now K has arisen from the dead and is in the other room with Susi, chatting on the phone with my mother about static IP addresses, while Susi thoroughly investigates the yellow cup I gave her. Oops - she just escaped and high-tailed it out of the office. Hold on -- ok baby is safe.

So I can finish describing the week.

Our new nanny seems to be a wonderful gift. When we first met Rea, we weren't sure about her, mostly because she was so shy and quiet that it was very difficult to get an impression.

In practice, it turns out that she is wonderfully quiet, gentle and patient with Susi. More than that, she is a calming presence for Susi's parents, asking ALL the right questions. "Is there anything else you'd like me to do before I leave today?" "Is there a bag that you would like me to pack for Susi before we go?" (I don't know if I mentioned before that our previous employee used to go off for 2-4 hours without a diaper bag, left early, or stood by the door for the last fifteen minutes of the day in her coat, reading or checking email on her iPhone).

Other wonderful things - it is so nice to come home and walk into a straightened living room, with all of the toys put away, and all of Susi's clothing folded neatly in the drawers. (again, things that we asked of the last nanny, that never seemed to penetrate into her brain). Oh, and for the past two days, Rea has prepared Susi's dinner just before leaving. So yesterday I came home to a happy, rested, FED baby. I didn't think it was possible for Susi to get happier. She is. Wow. Fingers crossed that this continues!!

So that's one good thing. The next good thing is that we hired cleaners! Their first visit was on Wednesday, and the results are wonderful. The floors are clean. The outside of the cupboards are clean for the first time since blighty's visit ;-). They have cleared away cob webs and dusted the tops of pictures and shelves. The floors!! K no longer hesitates when Susi escapes to crawl through the kitchen. (except for that LEETLE problem with the childproofing of the cupboard under the sink that has all those teeny tiny little poisons. gotta work on that.)

Anyway, those two very expensive developments have improved our quality of life.

Now if only we could get rid of the pantry moths. ugh. I just found another nest of them in a SEALED package of polenta. Needless to say, we will NOT be having polenta for dinner tonight.. ick.
